Newcomer Support: Easing Transitions, Building Futures
Since its launch, the program has supported dozens of newcomer families, significantly improving their sense of security and confidence. Many participants have already found jobs, enrolled in classes, and begun contributing to the local community. These outcomes reflect our mission: to create a network of support that fosters dignity, self-sufficiency, and belonging for Afghan newcomers.
Beyond direct assistance, our goal is to empower families to navigate their new environment independently. We provide one-on-one advisory sessions to explain public services, legal rights, and available resources. Families learn how to access housing, healthcare, and education — equipping them with the tools needed for long-term stability and success.
We offer a range of practical services tailored to each family’s needs. This includes help with job applications, resume writing, local transportation guidance, and interpretation during appointments. Volunteers and staff also assist with everyday essentials like grocery shopping, setting up bank accounts, and enrolling children in school. These small steps make a big difference in easing daily challenges.
Recognizing the urgent needs of newly arrived Afghan families, our newcomer support initiative was created to assist with their transition into life in Rochester. Many families arrive with limited resources and little knowledge of local systems. This program provides a welcoming bridge to help them feel safe, supported, and oriented during their first critical months in the U.S.
