Building the Future: Engaging Afghan Youth in Rochester
Afghan youth face a complex journey as they balance their heritage with growing up in a new culture. At AEDCR, we believe that engaging young people early on is critical to their development and integration. That’s why our youth programs are designed to foster leadership, confidence, cultural identity, and academic success in an inclusive and supportive environment.
Our after-school tutoring and homework assistance programs help students excel in the American education system while preserving their native language through literacy classes in Dari and Pashto. In addition, sports programs like soccer and basketball provide healthy outlets for physical activity, teamwork, and friendship. These activities give youth a sense of belonging and community while keeping them engaged and active.
Mentorship is another cornerstone of our youth strategy. Afghan youth are paired with mentors who guide them through school, career planning, and personal challenges. Through workshops focused on Afghan history, values, and culture, we instill a strong cultural identity and pride. This helps youth stay connected to their roots while developing skills to succeed in a multicultural society.
By investing in Afghan youth today, AEDCR is building the leaders of tomorrow. Our programs help them navigate the challenges of dual identity with pride and confidence, fostering future advocates, professionals, and changemakers within our community and beyond.
